Rehearsals

We rehearse at the Ropetackle Centre in Shoreham-by-Sea. We meet twice a month, on Sunday mornings from 10.30 to 12.30, though this is under review.
The next rehearsals are on:

March 14th - Brighton Dome 10:00am for rehearsal
March 28th
April 11th
April 18th - NEW DATE
April 25th
May 16th 
21st May, 2 performances : 7.00pm & 8:45pm at St Paul's West Street
23rd May rehearsal
13th June either performance at Lancing College or rehearsal
27th June either performance at Lancing College or rehearsal

What do we sing?

At the moment we're rehearsing songs by Abba, Gershwin, Cilla Black, Leonard Cohen, and Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers. Next year's programme will include the Beach Boys, 'My Fair Lady', the Andrews Sisters, Cole Porter, the musical 'Grease', classic songs such as 'Summertime' and 'Autumn Leaves', and many more.

What are the aims?

The primary aim is to make sure everyone has a fantastic time producing wonderful sounds with the help of great songs. On the way, you will learn something about the elements of good singing technique, in particular breathing, posture and attitude. We intend to arrange regular public performances, both because they help focus the mind during rehearsals and because music is essentially a shared experience between performer and audience.

2 Performances 12:00 midday, and 1:00pm rehearsal at 10.00 am
Bring your friends and family - free open day at the Dome.

The programme for March 14th will be: 

1. 'Anyone Who Had a Heart'
2. 'I Got Rhythm'
3. 'La Mer'
4. 'Money, Money, Money'
5. 'Wouldn't it be Loverly?'
6. 'I Could Have Danced All Night'
7. 'On the Street Where You Live'
8. 'Get Me to the Church On Time'
9. 'Waterloo'.

May 21st Brighton Fringe Festival
St Paul's Church, West Street, Brighton
2 performances at 7.00 pm and 8.45 pm.

There are three more possible performances that have yet to be confirmed:

• June 13th - Lancing College Chapel (tbc)
• Adur Festival - Marquee Beach Green
• David Bedford's “The Wreck of the Titanic”

After March 14th we'll then start working on the remaining songs in books 1 & 2. In a month or two we'll start work on a 'Grease' medley which our pianist Ian White is arranging.

Do I have to be an experienced singer to join?

Everyone is welcome. We have singers of all levels of experience, from those who claim never to have sung a note before to those who have sung in choirs all their lives. Whatever your age and ability, you will be able to learn and contribute and have enormous fun. You do not have to be able to read music, though we do work from music scores and you will find that you gradually and painlessly become familiar with the mysteries of written music. Those who read music and have experience of singing in choirs will have plenty of interesting harmonies to get their teeth into.

What does it cost?

All members pay £2.50 per rehearsal. Occasionally you will have to pay for music and CDs. The music book for this term is priced at £4, and our current rehearsal CD at £1.

Who runs the choir?

Shoreham-Singers-by-Sea is the brainchild of world-renowned bass player and music educationalist Herbie Flowers. The choir is run by the staff and volunteers of the Ropetackle Centre. Musical Director is Michael Hinton.
